WP-Lytebox
Aug 3rd, 2007 by Jared Schwager
WP-Lytebox is a plugin for WordPress which uses Lytebox to add a lightbox functionality like that of Lightbox 2.0 to images as well as HTML content such as web pages. This plugin will automatically group all the images linked to in a post into a gallery with next and previous links. The new version of Lytebox can be configured from the Lytebox Options page in the WordPress admin panel.
Download v1.3 (compatible with WordPress 1.5 to 2.5)
HTML content examples
For more information on how to use the HTML content feature, check out the “How to Use” section on the Lytebox website.
Installation instructions
- Unzip the file and upload the contents to the /wp-content/plugins/ directory on your web server.
- Activate the plugin from your WordPress admin panel.
- That’s all there is to it! Now Lytebox will be enabled on every thumbnail in your posts that is linked to the full-size version.
- You can also configure how Lytebox works via the options page in your WordPress admin panel.
Changelog
- 1.3 - lyteshow (slideshow) can be configured in WP admin panel, plugin will check for latest version on the Lytebox options page
- 1.2 - numerous code optimizations, moved Lytebox options page under Presentation section of admin panel, added WP 1.5 compatibility
- 1.1 - new Lytebox options page in WP admin panel, updated Lytebox to v3.22
- 1.0.2 - fixed issues with Lytebox not loading
- 1.0.1 - fixed minor bug mentioned by Bas
- 1.0 - initial release
Thanks to everyone for the great response to this plugin! I’ll definitely be adding some new features in the near future.

Nice thing, works out of the box

Beautiful plugin. Will it work with youtube videos?
Great stuff! Works first time.
Actually, I forgot to update the description to reflect that YouTube videos do not work as far as I can tell. The odd thing about it is that I can see the flash video for about half a second and then it disappears. I’ll have to get in contact with the author of Lytebox and see if he can fix this in the next version.

Rob, WordPress is most definitely free and it powers this blog. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to use it on Blogger since it doesn’t use the WordPress API and doesn’t allow for plugins. You may be able to use just Lytebox by itself on your Blogger blog though.

It didn’t do the previous and next links in my grey box when I had multiple images in my post… what am I doing wrong?
Great implementation!
I’m having problems with 404 errors for ‘/wp-content/plugins/wp-lytebox/images/blank.gif’ - nothing apparent to the user, but it shows in my 404 log every time I open an image with Lytebox
Any ideas on what could be happening?
nyuuchi, by default Lytebox will use different next and previous links than I have display on my blog. Just hover your mouse over the right or left side of the image you’re currently viewing, and you should see little next and previous images pop up on either side. This preference can be changed in the
lytebox.jsfile.Luciano, show me a working example of what you’re issue is and I’ll see what I can do.
Hi Jared,
I just found out what is happening. Line 26 in lytebox.css references a file called ‘blank.gif’ that is not in the download package.
#lbPrev{width:49%;height:100%;background:transparent url(images/blank.gif) no-repeat;display:block;left:0;float:left;}
Thanks again for the great plug-in.

Thanks, this is a great alternative to the WordPress plugin for Lightbox!
It works out of the box, but I had a few problems with older posts where the image links already had a
rel="lightbox[group]". The plugin adds it’s ownrelattribute instead of skipping or replacing an existing one.Maybe you could build in a fix for that… although it shouldn’t really be a problem for most users.
By the way, the function
lytebox_head()inserts ascripttag with thelanguage="javascript". This attribute has been deprecated in favour oftype(which you did not forget in the tag, fortunately) and does not validate XHTML 1.0 Strict (which I am trying to use).I simply removed the
languageattribute from the plugin, maybe you could do the same in a future version.Bas, thanks for pointing that out. I had just popped in the code that was presented on the Lytebox website and missed that.
Thank you very much!! this plugin is the best i can try, but i have a question, it’s possible make the funcion for the “excerpt” too?
Regards.
Hi:
I downloaded the zip file, unzipped and activated the plugin. I uploaded the images, and inserted them as thumbnail linked to file, however this effect is still not coming up. I m using ver 2.2.2 of wordpress.
Any help… am i doing something wrong or do i need to do some settings somewhere.
Thanks
ravi, email me a link to your website and I’ll see if I can’t find the problem.
thank you for the excellent plugin.
however, unfortunately, i have a problem. if i open my side about the url (http://poli.kilu.de/petzen) the plugin works. if i open my side about a domain (www.naturfreunde-petzen.at.tf) the plugin doesn’t work anymore. the picture opens in a new window without the lytebox effect.
at the moment i am using the lightbox-plugin, because it works at both variants (url and domain). but i want to use the lyteshow-function of your plugin.
thx
mario
ps: sorry for my bad english.
Mario, I’m not sure what’s going on. I’ll have to look into it.
Hi,
I am having a similar problem…
I installed the lyteBOx plugin and everything…
When you check the source code it parses right (the rel link is good)…
But the lytebox does not come up?
Any suggestions?
Hey Jared,
I used your plugin before and it is awesome, but now it’s not working anymore. I also deactivated all plugins but no change
I’m using WP 2.2.3 . Would be great if you can have a look at it. Just go to http://afrison.de and check out the posts with one picture.
Thanks for your help, I appreciate that
Alex
Alex, I’m not sure what to tell you. I don’t know why it’s not working, even after you deactivated all the other plugins. Are you using WP-Cache by any chance?
Hi Jared,
no, chache is deactivated right now, still in the developing progress, so it’s not on.
I don’t know why it’s not working. It’s such a great plugin, would be very sad if it’s not working. The thing is it worked before on the page, but now not.
thanks for any help
Alex
Hi Jared,
Having a similar issue with the lytebox not working. When clicked on the image it opens in another window.
I’ve tried this on two separate blogs with the same results…
/Steven
Steven, what version of WordPress are you using and what other plugins do you have installed?
Hi Jared,
I have tried it on a couple of blogs, both using WOrdpress 2.2.2.
One uses the Semiologic theme (and it’s associated plug-ins), and the other is a pretty straightforward WP blog with some SEO plug-ins and an AdManager (Adsense Deluxe type of plug-in).
All I know is that Lytebox worked with another blog similar to the latter (with same plug-ins), but can not get it to work on my latest blog.
/Steven
am having problem to view the image.
all files needed already uploaded to my server and link it to my bloggers account.
The problem is, when i click the pic, the background start to animate the way it should be, but the progress pic keep on going forever. What should I do to solve this matter?
Thank you in advance…
Eric, send me a link to your blog and I’ll take a look at it.
I’d appreciate it if everyone else who is having problem with this plugin could send me links to your blogs so I can look into the problem a bit further.
jesus christ on a bicycle! this is hot!!!
that problem everyone seems to be experiencing cleared up when i replaced your packed version of the lytebox.js file with the one from the lytebox site. i’m still interested in getting your working. Yours is 31kb lighter. thanks for all you’ve done. here’s your plugin in action, and helping to save abandoned bunnies and rats: http://veganpeople.net/
Jared - I am also unable to get this to work. Like Steven, pics open in a separate window, even when all other plugins are deactivated. I’m using Wordpress 2.3. The error log says, “PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function add_filter() in …/wp-content/plugins/wp-lytebox/wp-lytebox.php on line 32″
Just released version 1.0.2. This should fix the problem where Lytebox will not load.
Shanta, I’m still working on finding out what the problem is for the error you’re getting.
Some more info that might help you trouble shoot: James suggestion to use the lytebox.js file from the lytebox site cleared up the problem.
Shanta, I updated the lytebox.js file in WP-Lytebox, so there should be no need to replace the lytebox.js file if you download the new version of my plugin.
P.S. You should have received an email explaining this. But I may have forgotten to send it out to you.
[…] .. des Plugins WP-Lytebox. […]
I’m afraid that didn’t help, Jared. Lytebox.js in v1.02 of your plugin still won’t launch.
Shanta, I just released a major update to my plugin. Try it out and let me know whether it works or not.
how it work on wp2.0.10 ? pls..
still won’t lanuch –*
x, I just tested my plugin on a WordPress 2.0.4 installation and it worked perfectly. What other plugins are you using?
FYI, Your download link for version 1.1 is serving the version 1.0.2 file.
o cool sry i’m tested in wrong folder thx , mymistake
LOL
I second What Doug said above. Version 1.1 is still serving the 1.0.2 file.
Today I copied the plugin to the plugin folder and activated it. Unfortunately, I saw no Lytebox Option appear on my WP admin. Thumbnails where still opening as before, just like full size images on new browser windows.
After reading some comments, I downloaded the original lytebox.js file from the website, replaced it and on-site functionality works now, but I *still* don’t have a Lytebox Options in my WP admin. Since I’d like to configure the “next/previous” links to be always visible (like in your Orion Nebula presentation) and hadn’t read any other comments on this issue, I decided to comment.
I am using WP version 2.3 with a custom made theme. The only plugins I am using are: Dagon Design “Other posts from cat” plugin, and “WP Contact form III”
The only blog post I have uploaded thumbnails to is
This one
Maybe I am missing the Lytebox options somehow…let me know if you need to know anything else.
I love your plugin! Easy to use and looks great. Can it be used to autoload a page like google.com? Instead of just a page link.
Thanks
Steve
Doug and Diego, I just re-uploaded the plugin. Try downloading it now. The Lytebox options page will appear under the plugins page in the WP admin panel.
Hi jared, what a great piece of work you have done. Your plugin works great.
One question: I would like to translate the windows text to spanish. Do you have the sources of the “close”, “next”, etc. buttons?
Thanks in advance
Sorry, Jared. Same issue as before when I use wp-lytebox v1.1
Oops, I spoke too soon! Version 1.1 does work for me. And the options panel is a nice touch. Excellent work!
Hey Jared,
your plugin works perfectly, awesome plugin. But when I check the load time and what exactly the page loads everytime I see, that your plugin loads all different images of next, previous, close, play, pause on the page, which could take some ms for every page load. Would be great if you can check your code, that it’s only loading the image template which is selected in your option panel. With 5 images instead of 27 images, it would be much faster and less requests.
If you would like to check the load on each page, you can go to http://tools.pingdom.com/fpt/
It’s a pretty good tool. When you type in http://afrison.com you can at the end, it’s loading all images.
thanks
Alex
Alex, I had also noticed that during my own testing. I’m planning on releasing an update in the coming week that addresses this problem. (Don’t hold me to that time frame though. I’m doing some other under-the-hood optimizations to the code.)
No rush Jared, would be just great if you can manage it in your future release.
Thanks a lot
Alex
Tanguillo, unfortunately I do not have the source files for the close image and next and previous images. You may want to contact the author of Lytebox via his website.
Alex, I just released version 1.2 of my plugin which fixes the issue you we’re having.
Thanks Alex I ask him for the sources. And thanks for the new release, is working great
Hey Jared,
great work, you optimized the code quite a bit, my congrats. Just one suggestion, I would rather put the option page under option, like 90% of all other plugins, most people would expect it to be there.
Another thing, in WP 2.3 it didn’t show that there is a new version available. Just FYI
Thanks for this quick turnaround, didn’t expect it so early
Great job
Alex
Alex, I’m going to try and give the option of where to place the Lytebox options page in the next release.
Also, about the plugin update notification. I haven’t added my plugin to the official WordPress.org plugin repository because I feel it’s way too involved at this point with Subversion and all that crap. It’s quite confusing for me actually. Also, since the author of Lytebox released Lytebox under a LGPL license, I don’t think I can release my plugin under GPL, which is needed to get your plugin accepted to the WordPress.org plugin repository.
I’ll try and get in contact with the author of Lytebox and ask him about all the GPL/LGPL licensing details.
Glad you like the new version! More updates soon. (I’m hoping to add options for the built-in slideshow function in the next major version of WP-Lytebox)
I understand because of the license issue, just thought you forgot about it.
Thanks for doing such a great job
Alex
Hello Jared - I have an issue that time sensitive…..
I did change from the Greybox plugin to your plugin here cause I like to display a .html file with a google map but cant get it to work (same as with greybox plugin by the way). I even did manual insert the code in the html as it is on your page here. It is on http://www.puro-off-road.com/?page_id=18. Is there any assistance available to point out what I’m doing wrong??? The 2007 Baja Race starts tomorrow and I like to have it in functional conditions by then.
Also, if I try to configure some at the control panel, no matter what, I get a “You can’t enter that, smartypants!” Any advise on that?? if you or somebody else has a solution or alternative option for my Google map problem feel free to mail me from the contact page at http://www.puro-off-road.com/
Sorry for flaws in english writing, aint my first language, greetings from the Baja Peninsula.

great plugin! any idea when you might include the slideshow function?
Sean, the slideshow function will be configurable in the next version. I’m hoping to release it sometime this month.
i came to know of the plugin from wpthemesplugin and gave it a try .. dude ! its awesome !
Would it be possible to incorporate a little eye-candy like this :
http://cssglobe.com/post/1238/style-your-image-links
I have a problem when trying to run the following link in firefox, using lytebox (works fine in IE).
Virtual Tour
Peter, I’ll definitely consider adding that eye-candy to a future release of my plugin. I can’t promise it will be in the next update though.
Alan, my gut tells me it’s probably something to do with Flash. I seem to remember Firefox, Flash, and Lytebox not playing well together.
I really like this plugin.
I had a strange problem, for some reason the Lytebox css is not being found, and I had to manually add it to my main style.css
Any idea why this would happen?
(If I try to view the Lytebox css directly in the browser I’m not able to view the file and instead get the search page for my blog)
Cheers

Hey Jared,
I installed your plugin 1.3 on another website http://allbatteryfranchise.com and it didn’t work. I tried 1.2 and it worked right out of the box. I checked everything on 1.3 but couldn’t see why it’s not working. Any clue why it might not work? Right now I have 1.2 on http://allbatteryfranchise.com/ but if you want I can change it to 1.3 so you might check what could be the reason.
Thanks a lot in advance
Alex
Alex, did version 1.3 just not work at all, or were there certain things that weren’t working right? Did you try changing some settings after you activated the 1.3 version?
Maybe you have to rename the plugin folder from wp-lytebox-1.3 to wp-lytebox?
Does WP-Lytebox work with Wordpress 2.5?
